Parrots develop overgrown and mishaped beaks due to various reasons with nutritional deficiency being highest on the list. A sunflower seed diet is unfortunately deficient in many nutrients one of them being vitamin a. A lack of vitamin a is a major cause in incorrect beak growth amongst many other physiological issues.

Once the damage has been caused it is almost impossible to correct the issue and beaks will require constant maintenance.

Parrots require a healthy diet of a balanced pellet, loads of fresh veggies and fruits. They also need direct outside sunlight and must be allowed to exercise and move.

If you're unsure of what pellets and veggies to give do give us a call on 060 721 3214. We sre always willing to give much needed advice. No question is silly and no ask is too big. We are here for you and your bird.

So you want to own a macaw?

You see one on TV or in a petshop and you think wow id love to own one. Its beautiful, majestic and it speaks so well. All it needs is a cage and it will entertain me. It will bond with me and want to sit on me but only when I feel like it and have time. It just needs food and a cage, right?

Well think again.

Macaws are incredibly intelligent and social creatures. Often they bond with one owner and maybe if you're lucky tolerate other members of the family.

Their diets are diverse and they need a great quality pellets, fresh fruit and veggie EVERY DAY
Not.only when you feel like giving it. Some seeds and nuts to fulfill their dietary fat requirements.

Will they just be happy to sit in a cage all day? THE ANSWER IS NO. macaws are incredibly active and can barely sit still. Do you have the space needed to fulfill its active behaviours, is your home big enough for a large cage and an outdoor aviary? Macaws need to spend time outside a cage and they need space to move around.

Ill just buy it one toy a month and it'll be fine, right? Think again. Macaws have big beaks, they constantly need to chew. Why is chewing important, welll it stimulates them and keeps that beak filed down. They will go through toys quickly and will need much harder things to chew like wood, which they can break in a few minutes. So no. One toy is not enough, but rather a reserve of endless wooden pieces to give everyday amongst other fun things to play with.

It will be cute cause it can speak. Not all parrots learn to talk. Others just just mimic sounds and some never learn at all. But ill tell you what they do do. They scream and its not a gentle quiet kind of screaning, its loud and aggressive as you can hear in this video. You better be prepared to deal with that every day and your neighbour's too. So before getting one and having to rehome him, think.

It probably lives for 10 years thats not too bad. Well wrong again, Macaws can live anything between 30-50 years in captivity, well that the lucky few that have been well cared for and fed well their whole lives. These are a 50 year commitment. They will outlive you and where will they go next

They are not ornaments to hang and make your cage look pretty it is for the birds to destroy and to stimulate them.

I always use these two statements. 1. If you were in this cage would you be happy?

And secondly, keeping a bird in a cage is like keeping a 5 year old in a locked room giving it only moldy food or simply McDonald's (sunflower seeds) and closing them in with zero toys, entertainment and no socialinzing with anyone. If you wouldn't do it to children why do it to animals. They have souls and are not ornaments.

I have come across birds who have never seen sunl8ght, who have never been out of their cage in over 10 years. Who have one or zero preches and hang on the side of cages and bowls. I mean how can people see this as a happy life. They were not meant for cages they were not meant to be your pets.

Then people like us get left with the burden of taking more of these neglected souls in because we cannot bere the idea of leaving that bird there for one more second.

This puts a lot more strain and responsibility on us rescuers and so much financial burden. But the alternative is far worse.

So I beg you out there who own birds or want to keep birds do your research. Understand they are not ornaments or a sign of wealth they are souls that need everything you do.

To the breeders out there you have no idea how much cruelty, neglect and suffering you are causing to birds all over south africa. Stop the madness. Every week I have about two birds needing new homes.

Please stop.

Regular grooming is an important part of responsible parrot ownership. Often birds do not have enough toys and hard wood to chew preventing natural filling down of beaks. This can cause beaks to grow faster then can be filed down, and pushing out to the side and causing deformities.

Many things can cause abnormal beak growth -: trauma, liver disease, birth defect, malnutrition, lack of hard chew toys.

Make sure your birds have everything they need to live a healthy life.

Access to toys some hard to chew and some for foraging

Access to a varied well balanced diet consisting of pellets and loads of fruits and vegetables

Access to natural sunlight directly onto the skin and not through windows and roofs

Daily outside cage time as much as you possibly can

Lots of socializing and attention

Big cages where they can move freely

Daily fresh water

LOADS and LOADS of natural parrot safe wood for them to chew and debark. These are usually in the form of perches. Perches need to be natural wood and not pine dowels. These are not good for feet health. No parrot sits on smooth branches in the wild. They have different diameter and textures.

Love at first sight.

When two boarders fall deeply inlove (supervised).

These two can't get enough of each other. I couldn't understand why bouta kept flying to pikkewyns cage whenever I let him out, until I gave him a chance to get close enough (supervised of course) and these two just started grooming each other.

They are still figuring out how to give each other a turn. Pikkewyn definitely wants the princess treatment she is best at receiving rather than giving.
